A visit to Markenfield Hall, Auntie Vi and Ellingstring ....
Tuesday, 26th June and we decided to visit Markenfield Hall (not far from Ellingstring) with Chris and Alan. It is supposed to be the most continuously inhabited house in the country!
The Markenfield estate (600 acres) was first mentioned in the Doomsday Book (1086) continuing with its long being the home of the remarkable Markenfield family until they were bloodily ejected in 1569! Current occupants, Ian and Lady Deidre Curteis continue the restoration and only open the house for a few days each year to help pay for it.
Anne sweltering in the heat!
Yes, that is a moat! The house and courtyard are completely encircled with a moat, great for the foundations!
The Hall has been extended and modified many times over the centuries. The existing buildings are mainly from 1310 onwards. No photos of the inside of the house and Chapel because you had to pay extra to take photos.
Yours truly, Chris and Alan near the moat.
Wednesday, 27th June and a day trip to Sunderland. This is returning to Auntie Vi's apartment after taking her out to lunch in South Shields.
Anne and Auntie Vi in her beautiful apartment.
Thursday, 28th June. This is the Ellingstring metropolis consisting of 35 houses at the last count. There is only one mainstreet, the one that you see which is only one evehicle wide.
View of Ellingstring from a little further up the hill on an evening walk.
Another view of Ellingstring to show the setting in the Yorkshire Dales.
According to Tom Tom, this duck pond is the centre of Ellingstring!
